Five unique thing about India to explore this week
Kadoo Games by Dinesh Kumble
India’s incredible biodiversity deserves more recognition in order to give conservation efforts a boost in the right direction. The Kadoo board games designed by Dinesh Kumble do just that. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Dinesh is, in fact, our beloved cricketer Anil Kumble’s elder brother. The games are full of trivia about nature and conservation and its two versions take you on a journey through either our own Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve or the African Savannah. A great way to get kids interested in nature and conservation. This video shows you how to play.
India’s Unicorns
What if we told you that one of the many amazing natural wonders that India has to offer is a Unicorn? Well, not really. We only say that because the Latin word ‘unicornis’ means ‘one-horned’ and that’s in their name! Besides, the Great One-Horned Rhino or the Indian Rhino is no less impressive. It is the largest of rhinos to be found in the world and calls the Eastern Himalayas its home. One of our many under-appreciated treasures that need both appreciation and conservation. Here’s to the Indian Unicorns! Check them out.
Goth Chickens!
Here, we get into some truly weird Indian territory. The Kadaknath Chicken, found in Madhya Pradesh is a very unique breed. It has a very high protein and low fat content. But that’s not what makes it so intriguing. It’s the colour. This chicken species is completely black. The head, the claws, the bones of the chicken, even its eggs are a dark slate colour that would make any Goth person very proud. Related to the Ayam Cemani from Indonesia, this species has brought something of a relief to the poverty stricken region, where it is found. It is expensive and it takes a long time to cook, but a goth chicken is sure to be a truly unique experience. This video has more.
Indipop from the 90’s
Now, for a walk down memory lane! It’s not a long walk though; just up until the ‘90s and the halcyon days of Indipop. The music scene was opening up and people were suddenly seeing a plethora of pop videos! Be it Alisha Chinai’s Swadesi-themed track or Falguni Pathak’s song where a painting comes alive. Then there was this Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song that recently got remixed. If you guessed all these songs without us telling you their names, you are definitely an Indipop connoisseur. And if you didn’t, here’s a playlist to refresh your memory.
National Statistics Day - 29th June
The World might celebrate statistics some time in October, but did you know that India has its very own National Statistical Day? It is the birth Anniversary of one of India’s greatest statisticians Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis who gave us the Mahalanobis distance and his work made leaps in the field of anthropometry. We honor him this week. In 2018, on his 125th birth Anniversary, Google made a doodle in his honour and a coin was released commemorating him as well. But what are the statistical chances of you coming across this coin? We are not the ones who could tell you.
